The Internet of Things and Security Research Centre with an annual research expenditure exceeding £1M, comprises a team of 35 faculty members, postdocs, and PhD researchers. Our research focuses on securing smart digital environments, including but not limited to smart buildings, emergency services, and health, by combining scientific excellence with real-world implementation.

Our center collaborates with industry, public sector, and academic partners to conduct cutting-edge research in various areas. Our current research areas include Communications and Self-aware systems, IoT Security, Online Harms, Cyber-Physical Security, AI for Security, Threat Modelling, Formal Methods of Security, Cyber Risk Management, Cyber Forensics, Security Economics, Emergency Management, and Privacy. Through these research areas, we aim to develop innovative solutions to address the ever-evolving challenges in securing the digital landscape.

Prof George Loukas

Professor of Cyber Security and Head of ISEC

George is carrying out research and teaching in cyber-physical security, Internet of Things security and human factors of cyber security. Before joining the Univ. of Greenwich he led London Technology Network's Security and Sensing steering group, and previously was a PhD and post-doctoral research associate at Imperial College. Since 2020, he is listed in the top 2% of most influential researchers globally.

Prof Manos Panaousis

Prof Manos Panaousis

Professor of Cyber Security and Head of Cyber Risk Lab @ ISEC

Manos is carrying out research and teaching in assessing and mitigating cybersecurity and privacy risks. Before joining the Univ. of Greenwich he held various academic positions including Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Surrey (2017-2019), Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the University of Brighton (2014-2017). He also worked as a visiting researcher at the Institute of Security Science and Technology at the Imperial College London, UK (2013-2016), and a postdoctoral researcher at the Theory Group of Queen Mary University of London, UK (2013-2014).

Dr Georgia Sakellari

Associate Professor of Networked Systems and Deputy Head of ISEC

Georgia is an Associate Professor of Networked Systems at University of Greenwich and deputy head of the ISEC research group. Previously, I was a Senior Lecturer in Distributed Systems and Networking at Middlesex University and before that I was a Lecturer at the University of East London and a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at Imperial College London. I received my Ph.D. in Computer Networks from Imperial College in 2009, after a MSc (MBA) in Techno-Economic Systems and a MEng in Electrical and Computer Engineering from NTUA (Greece).

Dr Taimoor Khan

Associate Professor of Cyber Security and Head of the Cyber Assurance Lab @ ISEC

Taimoor is an Associate Professor of Computer Science, founder of the Cyber Assurance Lab. He has received a MSc in Advanced Distributed Systems from the University of Leicester, UK in 2008 and PhD (Dr. techn.) in 2014 focusing on Formal Verification of Computer Algebra Software from the Research Institute for Symbolic Computation (RISC), Johannes Kepler University, Austria, both with distinction. Before joining the University of Greenwich, he was a Lecturer in Cyber Security at Surrey Center of Cyber Security, University of Surrey, UK during 2018 and 2019. Prior to that I was a Postdoc at the MIT CSAIL, USA jointly during 2014-2016 and in SERG Group at the Alpen-Adria University, Austria during 2016-2018.

Dr Diane Gan

Dr Diane Gan

Principal Lecturer in Computer Security and Forensics

Diane has a PhD in Computer Science and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is currently a Principal Lecturer and teaches communications systems, digital forensics and cyber security at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She is a Chartered Engineer with the IET and has a number of industry recognized certifications. She currently holds the following forensics certifications ACE (AccessData Certified Examiner) certification, Guidance Software CF1 and CF2 (computer forensics), and Cellebrite Certified Physical Analyst.

Dr Anatolij Bezemskij

Dr Anatolij Bezemskij

Senior Lecturer in Computer Science

Anatolij is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science with particular interest in cyber-physical security. Previously he was a Research Associate working on the experimental evaluation of security breaches in smart home environments (ESPSRC CHIST-ERA project COCOON) and Ph.D student working on intrusion detection for autonomous robotic vehicles funded by the MoD's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.

Dr Sadiq Sani

Dr Sadiq Sani

Senior Lecturer in Cybersecurity

Sadiq received a PhD degree from The University of Sydney and professional education from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a Certified Ethical Hacker and an EC-Council Certified Security Analyst. He is versed in the Internet of Things (IoT), distributed ledger technologies (such as blockchain), and Operational Technology (OT). Prior to joining the University of Greenwich as a Senior Lecturer in Cybersecurity, he was an industry-oriented researcher/project lead and a lecturer at the University of New South Wales and The University of Sydney, respectively.

Senior Lecturer in Digital Security and Management

George is a Senior Lecturer in Digital Security and Management. He received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece, in 2012, his M.Sc. degree in Information Networking from Carnegie Mellon University, PA, USA, in 2008, and his 5 year Diploma degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece, in 2005. His current research interests revolve around IoT security and user authentication.

Dr Ivana Tomic

Dr Ivana Tomic

Senior Lecturer in Digital Security and Management

Ivana is a Senior Lecturer in Cyber Security. Her research interests span the areas of control engineering, cyber-security and wireless communication networks, with a focus on building secure, resilient and energy-efficient cyber-physical systems. Before joining the University of Greenwich, she was a Research Associate in the Computing Department at Imperial College London (AESE research group). During her time at Imperial College, she worked as a research associate on the S4 Science of Sensor Systems Software EPSRC programme grant and the IoT in the Park project as a part of the EPSRC PETRAS IoT research hub.

Dr Sakshyam Panda

Dr Sakshyam Panda

Lecturer in Cyber Security

Sakshyam is a Lecturer of Cyber Security with expertise in threat modelling and cyber risk optimisation. He received his PhD from the Department of Computer Science, University of Surrey in 2022. He has a BTech. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Institute of Technical Education and Research, India, in 2013 and M.Sc. degree in Human-Computer Interaction and Design from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden and Aalto University, Finland in 2018. He has worked, on a part-time basis, for three European funded projects, H2020 CUREX, and H202O SPEAR He has also been seconded through the Marie Curie Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) SECONDO project to work with cyber-insurance brokers CROMAR.


Dr Alireza Esfahani

Dr Alireza Esfahani

Lecturer in Computer Science

Alireza is a Lecturer of Computer Science. He received his PhD degree in Telecommunications from the MAP-TELE doctoral program, which is a joint venture of the University of Minho, University of Aveiro and University of Porto, Portugal in 2017 with distinction and merit. From July 2017 to May 2019, he gained working experience as a postdoctoral researcher at the Instituto de Telecomunicações in Portugal. Dr Esfahani’s research is in cyber-security, cryptography, SDN, IoT, 5G and network coding.
